Dear audience, dear friends, the programme of this year’s festival blickwechsel presents 35 theatre groups and soloists from 12 countries conjure a cosmos of artistic visions, reflecting all facets of the contemporary puppet, marionette, and object theatre scene. Are you ready?! Then watch closely, listen carefully, and open your heart! We need you, with all your senses primed. Because our art form has long been one that invites you, the audience, to not only watch but to also become involved and think about the story. You know that this aspect of our theatre art is an essential priority for us: Preferably in a transformative symbiosis of actors, puppet/object and stage space, our interested audience will gain a substantive understanding of issues and topics. After all, the object, puppet and figure theatre artists naturally consider themselves to be politically-minded and socially aware. They set out looking for subjects that are dear not only to their own hearts and reflect our direct past, the turbulent present and an uncertain future. Making this transparent is also the professed aim of this year’s festival.
Modify – renew – correct – reform – improve – metamorphose – re-design! Synonyms for one term: TRANSFORMATION! This buzzword, this plea, this mantra of our day naturally pervades all societal, social and cultural areas of our life. It is a postulate for heralded change, but the paths and aims remain diffuse. Yet what are the issues motivating the artists in this age, in which the preservation of values becomes existential, and what are some of the answers we can provide by showing hope and insisting on the right of each individual to pursue happiness?
The renowned Ensemble Materialtheater from the German city of Stuttgart has taken over the contract production of this year’s festival. The world premiere of “THE RIFFRAFF OF SAN CRISTOBAL”, one of the highlights of the festival week, puts the focus on the current European challenges with great empathy, a touch of humour and a decidedly optimistic statement. TRANSFORMATION also describes an additional programmatic aspect of the festival. The AUFBRUCH (AWAKENING) project, launched during this year’s festival, combines seven puppet theatre ensembles of the Eastern German states in a unique showcase. An international symposium lasting several days will offer a platform for discussing opportunities, areas of potential and survival strategies of the ensemble puppet theatres. And weitblick (NEW HORIZONS) dovetails with the AWAKENING project, where we present ensemble puppet theatres and artists in the independent scene from Russia and Bulgaria.
Are you ready for a very special theatre journey? An adventure that already makes you tingle with anticipation? Then we will see each other, and I look forward to your participation!
